I was just thinking how much harder learning stuff would be without the internet.
What do you think of the net, and how would your life be different?

I think the internet is a great resource for educational/technical information, finding good deals, and entertainment of all sorts.
I wouldn't have learned a lot of different things as soon if it weren't for the internet and I wouldn't have even met a few people if it weren't for the internet.
I can't list everything that I use the internet or my computer for because it'd take too long to type it all out. With restraint it's a VAST and rich resource for a lot of positive things.
The world is waiting. I must leave you now.
>>What do you think of the net, and how would your life be different?
i think we all know the upsides of the internet (the pr0n and all that other junk like cboard and FD and crap)....but the internet is a HUGE time waster.
If there was no net my grades would be better and I would have more time for other things I enjoy doing. Think about how much time you spend replying to freagin dumb posts on the multiple forums you are a member off. Or all the time that RoD spends looking at pr0n, and that is at least 25 times a day. Sometimes I just surf the internet and the [wink]intraweb just in order not to do something that I should.....man.
Of course you could blame it on my laziness or whatever...but if there was no internet that wouldn't happen...but then again, I would probably find something else that is just as stupid to do..... meh....
TOO much rambling...I just finished my paper. Don't you just love it when you write a paper in single space format, and then at the end you double space it and its twice as big?!?! lol...of course we all know that it will be twice as long, but the feeling is pretty good....from my 6 page paper on ancient Roman wives, I now have a 12.5 page paper...hahahahaha....I will leave you off with two quotes from Plutarch...feel free to put any in your sigs:
“…a wife should have no feelings of her own, but share her husband’s seriousness and sport, his anxiety and laughter”“…the husband should rule the wife, not as a master rules a slave, but as the soul rules the body, sharing her feelings and growing together with her in affection. That is the just way”

After using the internet extensively for my learning (both academic and non-academic) for the last couple of years, I can hardly picture myself in a learning environment without the internet and definitely it played (and still playing) a major roll in my grades. Many of you may not agree but I think the internet is the one of the best (if not the best ) learning resources. Perhaps, the best thing of the internet is, its extreme dynamic nature which is full of varieties and it can make learning interesting and fun, and when I get tired of learning, I can have a quick tour in the world of porn for refreshment
I have honestly mostly forgotten how to do research otherwise. Do you know how obsolete the library has become!? I think I only stepped inside my former University's library 10 times in my 5 year career there, and most of those were to copy something or just to study in a quiet environment.
I won't use the library unless I specifically have to get a book... and even then I'd rather get it off of Amazon.
It's a reservoir of knowledge that is at your fingertips. However, it requires knowledge of it's own to operate it properly.
With the right combination of keywords you can read up on any topic really fast.
For example I was at a cemetary recently and saw lots of gravestones with the word "yezidi" on them. Those graves looked really pretty and well maintained so I got interested in what that word may mean. When I was home, I put it into google, clicked two links and I had the answer in about 90 seconds.
A fast mobile phone sms typist and someone with a computer and some knowledge of how to operate it can crash any bars table quiz.
But despite being really simple to operate, a simple Google search will mystify 50% of people. Put a normal guy in front of a computer and asking him for the birthplace of Charlie Chaplin will probably be a real problem and a two hour search while all you really have to do is put "charlie chaplin birthplace" into google.
By using the internet, you can extend your computer knowledge into other regions and multiply it. Without this knowledge, the net will just be a waste space of unsorted information, too huge and to chaotic to get any help.

When in doubt, read the FAQ.
Then ask a smart question.
>>I have honestly mostly forgotten how to do research otherwise.
yeah, but you also have to take in account that 90% of what you actually find is garbage or close to it....man, internet researching has tripped me up a few times already. The websites look real preofessional and legit; one would think the info they provide is true - but that isn't so. It was my mistake that I didn't varify the info in another source, but sometimes one just doesn't have time. If you take something out of a book, you can be 99.9% sure that it is true and accurate.
>>Do you know how obsolete the library has become!?
yes, yes I do. Yesterday I was meeting with my partner for a project we are to do...a couple of years ago, the "normal" or "typical" place to meet to research a project would be the library....now we met in a lounge with a bar because it had a wifi connection..hehe

HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA..... that's a good one.If you take something out of a book, you can be 99.9% sure that it is true and accurate.
You're joking, right?
>yeah, but you also have to take in account that 90% of what you actually find is garbage or close to it
As with any library or newspaper, that depends on your indexed search. You can read the tabloids or the real papers and you can read junk or real stuff on the net as well. It all comes down to proper indexing and organising search results by picking he right question from the start.
Books can be good or bad, the net can be good or bad, and nothing you haven't witnessed yourself is neccessarily the truth. But you can find good articles on any subject out there if you know how to look and it's much easier when using the net instead of a library.
Although we should not forget that the wast amount of information available is in english and many people out there would need a good understanding of the english language before they'd be able to understand an english essay about genetics or something like that.

Gotta tweak those margins...heh Works not bad, as long as you don't get greedy, the prof won't call you on it.Originally Posted by axon

Well yes, this is true, I should have specified that you have to tweak by decimal points like .2 - every little bit counts, but like I said you can't get greedy.
Figuring that most are setup to be done is portion of inches .2 is a lot and is easy to notice especially when you have something to compare it to.
What will help you move is the use of header and footers where possible

I wonder when we wont have book based libraries anymore, it would be cool to be able to check in and borrow out any ebook you like all over net. Then you truly would forget researching before net.
I just stumbled on to this www.gnu.org/philosophy/right-to-read.html the other day... for those who haven't read it yet ( yes ober i know it's old ). Which makes me wonder if we will ever get FREE elibraries?
