Incidentally, malls around here are already starting to play Christmas themed songs. Nooo....

Well, if you're using Hungarian notation as an abbreviation scheme for the purpose of a variable (so-called "apps Hungarian") then it is probably fine. On the other hand, you might not need to abbreviate at all.

It's because of that, and the crowds, that I do my holiday shopping in September.

Every year, every single year, since maybe 20 years ago, I promise myself I will start Christmas shopping much earlier. Hopefully will even catch some cool sales. And I always fail to do just that. The fact I can't follow through with such a basic and simple plan irritates me beyond words.

You could try doing Christmas shopping in January

When everyone is returning the crap they didn't want? No thanks. I wait until February, and return the crap I didn't want from Christmas and my birthday.
What can this strange device be?
When I touch it, it gives forth a sound
It's got wires that vibrate and give music
What can this thing be that I found?

It's a difficult habit to pick up. I used to be a December 24th shopper (or 23rd, if I was shopping for Elysia) and always got fed up. Now, if I think about the holidays in late summer or early fall (it usually crosses my mind at some point around then), I immediately add shopping to my calendar so I remember.

It's glorious. And it's still not too late for this year.

I see what you did there. Have you ever shopped for Elysia?

Same. Every year for the past few years I've gotten overloaded at work right at the end of the year, and as a result I'm always scrambling the last week before Christmas to get everyone presents. Luckily, this year my wife is going to do the majority of my gift shopping.

Not really. I just have a hard time letting go of certain jokes.

I can confirm I've never gotten a present from Matticus.
Matticus, did you forget to give your presents that you bought as usual?

(I tried to show how silly the language debate is in my previous post. I guess my humour didn't work, sorry. Should have left it well alone, I guess.)

I'm ashamed of my poor gift-giving: I only want to give gifts that have at least some meaning, but can never find anything people don't already have. So, I tend to go into stealth mode during Christmas instead. I wish I was better at expressing my good intentions, gift-wise or any other way.

In Finland, Halloween is really not a traditional holiday; the All Hallow's Eve is, and it's more of a somber remembrance of the dead. I'm irreligious, but find that at heart, a lot of the traditions is about people binding together into communities, and showing respect and love for each other, and I really like that.

    Therefore:

I'd like to propose a toast for the members that have already passed -- like Adak, whose input and insight I still miss, even if we never met in person.

I also wish all of you still here happy, joyful holidays with family and friends during the next solstice.

I used to be the exact same way. Then about 3-4 years ago I made these 36 * 24 inch charcoal portraits of everyone to give away at Christmas (it's a thing I've been doing since I was little). It took a month or so to get everything done, working a few hours a day. Some of my family liked them, and others told me I should have bought something instead (one person said a card would have been better lol). It started this silly discussion of whether spending money on presents makes the present better, but all I know is I'm not doing that again!

This is very heartfelt and important to me because sometimes, very occasionally, I miss Dave Sinkula and his advice.
