Depends on the school, and sometimes the major. I don't think I wrote a single essay, but I was applying for engineering. I think other majors were required to write essays. Don't quote me on that, however.

Every school I applied to required at least one personal essay regardless of our intended major.

Well... keep in mind it's been almost 7 years since I applied to a college... it may have changed.

I go to Mt. Lebanon High School, PA. Ranked first in the state for public high schools.

Thanks Speedy5. I was just wondering, since scores are really competitive at my high school, Thomas Jefferson HSST. It would've been a cool coincidense.

Most major colleges require an essay, and often two. There are a few places that do not, but not many that I've run into.

Remember that high SAT scores won't get you into the colleges you want to. I got a perfect score through some bizarre statistical fluke or quantum fluctuation or grace of the Almighty God, and was rejected by my first choices due to a low GPA, no extracurriculars, no effort exerted on my essays, etc. So I'm at a mediocre state university, with visions of Ivy League dancing through my head. I keep trying to pound this lesson into my little sister's head. I hope she gets the point.

I don't worry, I've worked up the other elements (extracurricular activities, leadership, projects, service, connections, etc). I don't care for my SAT score, I don't even believe in it. But I swear I probably did better than what I got.
