What are your thoughts on the issue. I don't mean pirating ps2 games or anything that overt, more like downloading the occasional impossible to find 8 or 16-bit game.

I'm a shameless bastard with no "real" copies of anything
I use emulators, though not for new stuff
I don't really care
I don't like them myself but don't object to others using them
THEY ARE EVIL!!!!

One death is a tragedy, one million... a statistic.

In case I forget, I use Bloodshed Dev C++ v.4
I don't really mind people using emus for old stuff (although playing SNES games on your PC is nothing compared to the real thing), but for newer games they are evil.

i seriously dont ****ing care. i dont care if people use them, i dont ever have time to play any emulation games, and i ccant ever find any games!

I think collectively as programmers we should be against such desecrations of many hours of hard work.
Emulators are slower anyway.
they're evil
i bought all my games for NES...which i still play a couple of times each week. I'm the only person i know with one still functioning...i attribute it to not using those damn cleaning things, i'm positive those did more harm than good.

Programmers also make the emulators...Originally posted by Brian

I think emulation is rad. There are other uses for it besides piracy.
Emulators have been sold, legally, in stores. Doesn't anybody
remember Bleem? Bleem was supercool. Sony took them to
court but lost. You have to admire a guy who can get a Dreamcast
to run PSX games that look much better than as if they were
running on a PSX.
Nintendo has been including emulators in a lot of their recent games.
In Animal Farm they include several old NES games. The new
Zelda game will have an N64 Emulator that plays Ocarina of
Time and Ura Zelda. Metroid Prime has the original NES version of
Metroid in it.

Wrong.
> i attribute it to not using those damn cleaning things
Cool, but you see, if it does get dirty, no harm.
Nintendo's will last forever so long as you don't bend the pins on the 72 pin connecter. If you do, you can replace them for dirt cheap. Open up the box sometime and clean the pins with a piece of sandpaper hence shaving off grit leaving a fresh layer of metal, or use cuetips and rubbing alchohol. It works great. Trust me. I did it a few weeks ago and my nintendo which wouldn't play anying now plays everything perfectly. (NOTE: You have to slide the 72 pin connecter out and really go at it).
> Emulators are slower anyway.
MAME isn't.
Most emulators aren't either. 99.9% accuracy.
I don't know about the PS, dreamcast, or any of those, but the Nitendo 64 emulator is decent. The SNES and NES emulators are good because they've been around forever, and I own the systems I have games for (in most cases).
Emulators just require alot of power. More than you'd think. Rockness X(the best NES emu IMO) requires a 500mhz CPU and a decent video card plus Direct X 8.
> and i ccant ever find any games!
PM if interested.
> although playing SNES games on your PC is nothing compared to the real thing
Not really.
Get a good computer and output it to a 27" television with the $235 Hot Rod SE arcade authentic dual joystick panel.
I do like playing on the real SNES or NES though.
Reznor007 might like this one..

Emulation is a great preservation tool. There are several prototype games in MAME that had less than 100 machines made, which would have been long forgotten if they weren't in MAME.
I do agree that emulation of new stuff isn't really good. MAME has a rule that a game newer than 2 years old won't be included. There have also been a few exceptions to that rule, with the Golden Tee Golf games from 97-2000(IIRC) are not included because Incredible Technologies still sells them(a driver was written for them, but never distributed).
I also have a working NES, and my brother does too. The cleaning kit does work, but if you aren't careful it can grab a pin and wreck havok
Emulation of the past generation of consoles is very good for the most part, with SNES, Genesis, and Playstation working near perfect. N64 emulators "work" but use many shortcuts, and simulate the RSP more than truly emulating it. Dreamcast emulation is just now starting to come around, with DOA2 and Crazy Taxi starting to work with 3d graphics.
With anything though, I prefer the original if it is not too hard, or too expensive to own. I've bought quite a few games even though I had the ROM playable in an emulator, and I own a real Street Fighter 2 CE arcade PCB, and a real Mortal Kombat 2 arcade PCB, both working great.
How can you even say that. I know it's way off-topic, but why would you say that he is wrong about that?!?! If I told you I'm the only person I know with a 797 MHz PIII would that mean I'm wrong? No. I AM the only person I know with that, even though there are thousands of other people with the exact same thing. So how you can say he's wrong is just beyond me.Originally posted by Shadow

Wrong.

I wasn't intending to be offensive.
So since we also have a picky crowd, I'll rephrase it.

Now you know somebody who still has a working unit.
Better?

Yes, thank you
I also have a working NES, and Sega Genesis with quite a few games for both. I sold my SNES years ago though, but am hanging on to the NES as long as I can.
I use CCS64 (C64), ZSNes (Super NES), and FCEU (NES) emulators. It's fun to play old games C64 games and I'm a fan of the original FF games (esp. VI), so to be able to play them is great. I see no harm in this - these games are no longer available to purchase, and those consoles are long extinct. I can't see how this is ripping off any of the developers of these games.
the only way you could rip them off is if you were originally going to by the console or game, yet got the emu/rom instead and thats not likely.

one day. Companies have been releasing a lot of their old games
on compliation discs; and when people download the illegal,
pirated versions of those old games -- that cuts into the
companies' profit potential.
FFI will be released on Playstation soon. Namco and Midway
have both released several volumes of their old arcade classics.
Nintendo has an e-reader that hooks up to the Gameboy Advance;
they sell old NES games on little cards that get scanned trough
the e-reader and played on the GBA. Sega has sold a 'classics'
disc for PC, DC, and GBA (cartridge here, though) that emulates
some of their old Genesis games. They've also created a Sonic
Mega Collection for Gamecube.

I have about a little more then a thousand roms for NES so i can't talk lol
