I'm wondering - where can I get, for free, decent TV recording software? The software that comes with my TV tuner (the AverMedia AverTV Hybrid Volar Max) is very limiting. I would like variable bit rate 12 Mbps MPEG-2 video recording for the standard 720x480 size. Other features like video resizing, full screen, etc. are not really necessary for my needs. The TV tuner's software is just 8 Mbps and fixed bit rate. Using a fixed bit rate deteriorates the quality. For source/original files, this low quality isn't very worthy to me. Virtual Dub only seems to accept 320x240 as the maximum (but doesn't record into MPEG-2) and DScaler seems to have a severe stability problem (and the warning that shows involving a driver and a BSoD possibility makes it scary and thus I refuse to use DScaler (if that is actually TV recording software)).
