If you tell us what OS you want the proxy to be on, it would help.

XP has a simple "internet sharing feature" described here - is that enough, or do you want more than that [e.g. configurable caching, monitoring, prevention of access to certain sites]?

What you are after is called Internet Connection sharing on windows XP. In order to configure this you will have to have two network adaptor. So the basic idea is that, one network adaptor will be connected to the internet and the other one gets connected to your LAN.

Then what you do is, create a bridge between those two connection. You windows machine wiill start acting as router or something between the networks. But the only problem with I find with this the machine which is been bridged should be always on to get access to the internet within your LAN.

Follow this tutorial on how to configure the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)

Yes, I got sidetracked, but I did look up a MS web-page that gave instructions on how to set that up, and my intention was to link to that site - missed out the link tho, and I've closed that tab in FireFox, so I can't quickly get the link back.
