Compatibility is not a bad reason to do a conversion.
Just consider it comparing lower quality sound to no sound at all.
I don't find it amusing at all. Converting top-of-the-notch compression and sound into something lower quality and older. Plus a re-encode WILL result in lower quality, no matter what you do. That's the way of lossy encodes.
Meh, s/he can always copy the file first.
