    Renaming file extension

I was downloading a couple of TV shows while I was at work. This was done by divx player, which also likes to crash all the time.

When it crashes I am left with a .part file, which only it can seem to play. The problem I have is that when I actually try and play anything using divx player it crashes, and If I am lucky enough for it to successfully run for longer than 10 minutes the sound and video become more and more out of synch.

I usually play stuff with WMP or Real because at lest they work, but they dont recognise a .part extension. Since pretty much all I am missing are the end credits I figured if I could change the file extension to .divx they may be able to play them even if some stuff in the header is wrong.

Is there anyway I can change the file extension easily in WinXP? I cant seem to work out how.

You mean with a program, or through the GUI?

BTW, the .part extension means "partially completed download." It's simply an incomplete file. Headers, if present, won't be corrupted. You can rename the file but it won't be complete.

Have you looked at the VLC player? I love it.

just click on the filename. but if it's a .part, it's probably just an incomplete file.

I was hoping to be able to do it through windows, or some app to save having to write a prog for it.

Yeah, thats what it seemed like. The video data is obviously there.

That won't seem to work. Whatever I name the file it dosent affect the extension, I just end up with a file like: something.divx.part
Also none of the right click options seem to offer a solution either.

Arghh. if I remember right, there's an Explorer setting something like "Always preserve original file extension" or somesuch you have to turn off. Otherwise you need to start a shell (cmd.exe) and use the rename command to change the filename.

Yeah I managed to find it. Its an option in that annoyingly obscure place you have to go to to show hidden files.

I renamed the extension, but it still only wants to play in divx player

Oh well, I'm downloading VLC player, when thats done I'll have a go at opening it with that.

Happens to me occasionally, Mplayer (On Linux and Windows) seems to play whats there - not to mention it's stable.
