    CPU Temps

In process of getting my new computer up and running. This is the first one I have had with temperature monitoring. I was wandering what the average idle temp should be. Mine is running about 122f right now (Pentium D 820 dual core).

I have also heard that heat transfer from the CPU to the heat sink gets better after the thermal paste has time to cure. True?

122f is perhaps a bit on the hot side for idling, but not overly so. However, you should stress the CPU and see how far up it goes. Intel CPUs should not go much above 131f on full load. 140f is the absolute limit.

What about AMD? I have an AthlonXP 3000 (codenamed Barton) sitting in a motherboard not getting used at the moment. When I used it in a case with six fans and with a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ overclocking heatsink/fan combo, the cpu idled at 122 fahrenheit. Full load it would go up to 140 sometimes a tiny bit higher if running a raytracer.

In my experience, AMD chips are usually cooler than Intel chips. Although, that was only one experience, when I compared a friends computer to mine. Her P4 2.something Ghz was running around 55C idle, while my Athlon 64 3000+ (2Ghz) was running around 30-35C idle.

You generally don't as far as I can tell. I've heard of the Sempron 2800 running at 24C on full load. The AthlonXP I have is known to run hot though. Figures anything with XP in it won't be that great.
