Linux (not programming) E-mail server question.

::Bows head in shame:: I'm looking for a Exchange type e-mail server (preferably open source) for Linux (come on, give me a break. My boss is an Exachange fan. . . I hated managing the Exchange server in my last job). I have heard a rumor that Mozilla has one that is on the brink of coming out, however, I haven't found any more information.

I'll switch to Mozilla when/if they release, however, I'm in need of a good server now. A buddy of mine recommened Eclipse. . . but I've also looked at the GNU's Shohei.

Anybody have any experiance with any of the open source "business e-mail servers" that are available? Specifically what I would want is a server that stored all of the e-mail server-side, then allowed access to the user directories/folders via an imap client. Web interface is also needed.

Thanks in advance for any advice you folks can give.

What exactly is the full functionality of the Exchange server that you need? I personally have a setup composed of qmail, fetchmail, dovecot and squirrelmail which allows IMAP access and webmail, and also fetches all mail from my freemail account into my local folders.
    All the buzzt!

Well now that is a good question. One for which I don't have a good answer. My boss is one of those "give me something and if it's good that I'll like it. I'll make suggestions after you've already busted your butt attempting to put something together for me." kind of guys. . . In other words, I need to make it as close to Exchange as possible. I guess what he is wanting is an e-mail store server-side, and maybe even some type of scheduling/calendar stuff. . . but, again, I don't know what will suit his fancy until after I have come up with something that he likes/doesn't like.

I'm leaning towards GNU. . . but I really won't know what it does until after I've built the little sucker.

Okay, anyone ever hear anything good/bad/indifferent about Open-Xchange?

linux based enterprise class email system...

    Lotus Notes / Domino Server.
[ yes, IBM finally released the full Lotus Notes suite for linux, and IBM is good about snail mailing a dvd with trial versions of their products out. ]

open Xchange is still a young project, I haven't heard from anyone using it.

most linux systems combine multiple software packages to gain the functionality that is desired, as CornedBee detailed.
This has a huge benefit over MS Exchange, in that if any single piece breaks, you only have to look at that one piece to fix it, the entire email system isn't crashed.
[ modular is better for reliability than the MS monolithic style ]
