    project details

Does anyone know of a site where we can get details about projects regarding OPEN SOURCE that can be done by students over a period of 2-3 months? I googled for about half an hour , I could not really dig much out.
I am basically looking at something like an application involving linux, wherein students can contribute with patches or fix bugs. Its not feasible for us (student community) to start with an application form the scratch and finish it in 3 months.
To be more specific, I would really appreciate it if some one could guide me towards something invloving linux and networking considering the time constraint.
Really hope some one here has some idea.

What do you mean students? An Open Source project is an Open Source project is an Open Source project. Are there Open Source projects for students?

An Open Source for students is... err... a Racist Source project. It's like having a Black Source Project, or White Source Project or Semite Source project.

Just grab an Open Source project from SourceForge.Net and... contribute. That's what you do in Open Source Projects. You download the code, look at it, and provide bug fixes and improvements.

    Why not?
All projects vary in size from a few days to several years. You've just got to pick the scope of the problem.

What interests you as a group, what sort of skills do you have?

There are any number of small games which could be implemented in a group in that time period. The whole thing might take a year, but you can choose things like
    - no network play
    - no AI
    - simple graphics
    - simple sound
    - hard coded / small levels
to reduce the overall scope of the problem.

Then when you next have some time, you can add a feature to what you've built already.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Why are you worried about what other people have done.

Just get in there and enjoy the learning experience.

    We can't hand-hold you forever.

In other words, do what your sig line says!

I don't know how it was called exactly but it was something organised from withing Google. You could join up with a team of developers on project you choose from something like 40 projects or more...

Although I think this was for during the summer period where students have holiday and could be working on this.

Anyhow, maybe they also have this kind of thing all year trough.

    Edit:

    Found the link again: http://code.google.com/summerofcode.html

Just in case you have the same thoughts within less then a year .

The open source project Emerald Editor is looking for programmers. They don't have anything out yet though - I don't even know if they have anything in CVS/SVN.

Judging by their subversion directory, they do need help. Everything is 3 months old except for a couple of sources 10 days old.
