I finally got a laptop and the last time I setup wireless in linux it was using an ancient airnet card on debian.
I have an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network card and I installed the ipw3945 driver and utilities (emerge ipw3945). lsmod shows that the driver is loaded and dmesg shows the card was detected but when I run iwconfig no card shows up.
When I first emerged ipw3945 I had an eth1 that was the wireless but after a reboot it's been gone ever since.
I have very little experience setting up wireless so any help is greatly appreciated.
$ uname -a
Linux localhost 2.6.17 #6 SMP
i686 Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2250 @ 1.73GHz GNU/Linux
edit:
Well the card gets recognized now, it turns out I had some kill switch at the top. How do I get dhcp working with the card now? I'm using wireless-tools.
edit 2:
I think I have wireless tools down, but I can only connect to certain wireless networks, it might just be that I hadn't registered my wirless card's mac address with my university. Any suggestions? I won't be able to test it till tommorrow (I'm currently in the dorms who's wireless network works).
edit 3:
Everything works now.
