    computer freeze up

    Hi All,
My computer has been acting fun. I'm running XPw/sp 2. It started when firefox would freeze the computer. So I stopped using firefox and went back to IE. Now if I just let the computer run without doing everything it'll freeze up after 5-10mins. But if I use the computer it will run all day. Also when it freezes up the harddrive light is on. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Check for spyware, trojans, worms, viruses, conflicting programs, un-identifiable processes.

On a side note, I really dont like sp2.

Nope no spyware or anything like htat also. I alos noticed that in the task manager, cpu useage would be ~10% while the system idle process would have 97-98%. This doesn't seem right? Thanks

Did you check for weird processes? Did you check the run location in the registry?

I would suspect some type of malware first as mentioned above, but if you don't find any infections try turning off all power management to see if that is causing the problem.

One thing that comes to mind is under power management there is an option to turn off hard disk after a time period. Maybe trying setting that to "never"

Ya but doesnt it turn off the screen while it does that? It's a good suggestion but I'm not sure thats the problem.

Ah yeah, I just saw that he said the hard drive light was on and its fine if he's using the computer, but if it's only 5-10 minutes idle and it does that...

    Thumbs up

I hate to reply to months old thread but I thought I would post a update on the fix.

There was a file in the Firefox profile that when it was accessed would frezze up the computer. Whenever virus scanner or defragmentor whould run it would come across this file and the comptuer would freeze. After deleting the file and empting trash can everything works great now.
