My friend has older compaq pc with a 900mhz AMD Duron processer and I can't seem to get the agp port to work on it. It has an onboard card that shares the system memory and it came with a 16mb agp graphics card as well. But it doesn't seem to over ride the board one. I've looked at the bios setting and i don't see any where on how to turn off the onboard. The bios is very different from others and it has very few settings. Have any idea on why the agp one is not working.

This probably isnt the fix, but I had a similar problem once, and had to set it to PCI in the BIOS even though it was an AGP slot. Are you sure the graphics card still works?
The bios is so simple on the computer it doesn't have an option like that. I'm not 100% sure that the cards worked i've tried two but i haven't tried them in other pc's yet.

Is the on board a card you plug into an AGP or is it actually integrated into the mobo? Also are you trying to plug another card into an AGP slot and it won't work? Chances are the comp will use the first card if they are the same(ie. vid cards). If it is just plugged into the AGP slot just un plug that, otherwise you might have to find a jumper to switch.
No the onboard one is build on to the motherboard it can not be removed. I'm trying to add a agp card to the computer. I didn't see a jumper on the board for the which graphics to use but i can look again.

Have you installed the driver for the card yet? There is a very good chance that both the AGP card and the onboard video will work at the same time, so there should be no reason to "override" the onboard video.

The screen will never turn on when its pluged into the agp card.

Yellow, and it never does anything. It seems to me that the motherboard is just overriding the agp and just using the on-board instead.

What is the model of the machine? Compaq usually keeps information on their older models on their website for quite a while. Might also be able to dig up something with it.
Oh and I don't suppose he happens to know the power output of the power supply does he? Compaq (and HP as well) seems to leave that tidbit off their site. I've had trouble with cards in the past simply because the power supply couldn't meet the demand.
I'm also going to assume that the AGP card is actually working??
My experience is that you have to switch it from using the onboard to using the agp slot, especially in older computers. Look up on compaqs website for the manual and figure out where the jumper or bios setting actually is.
