I built my own computer. My motherboard is an ASUS P4S800 supports 3.0 ghz P4 and 800fsb. My cpu is an P4 2.66ghz 512 L2 cache. I got 512 mb of ram. Problem is, I start the computer, and the light on the bottom of the motherboard turns on. And thats it. No fans moving, no sounds of anything. Is it my power supply or motherboard or what? Can i fix this or do I need a new part?
My guess would be a problem with your BIOS. What specifically, I don't know, and I would question whether or not one can tell based on that information alone.
edit: My best guess would be faulty wiring somewhere between the BIOS and the power supply.
What is the size of the Power Supply? Did you connect the 12V power connector (a must for all P4s)? How are you starting the computer? Did you connect the wires from the buttons on the case to the pins on the motherboard? Try unplugging all non-necessary devices (optical drives, HDs, floppy, extra fans) and see if it powers up. With the information you're giving, it would sound like your power supply doesn't have enough juice to start all those elements.
But you're not giving us much, so who knows.
Well its a 400W so I think it might be the faulty wiring between BIOS and Power Supply. Is there anything I can do about that myself? Thanks for the help guys.
Did you try any of the stuff I suggested? Did you check all your wiring? Did you consult your mobo documentation about how to set it up? What kind of PSU is it? Most 400W PSUs are not built good enough to handle a decently sized system.
I disconnected all the non-neccessary components and it still just lights up(documentation says its on or on "soft" mode, but nothing else happens. I checked the wiring from the power button to the mb and it was connected safely. The documentation just tells you how to screw it in and explains all the parts but that's not helping me. And what's the PSU. Is that the chipset? If it is, then mine is a SiS 648FX with FSB800.
And answering your earlier question, I start it up by switching the back power on. That's when the light turns on, and then I press the power button and nothing happens.

I'd suggest you check the connections between the front panel switches and the mobo. When I put in my P4P800, these were quite fiddly, and some of them, not teerribly intuitive - i.e. you'd think the wires would connect to adjacent pins, but not all of them do, sometimes there is an unused pin between them.

PSU is short for Power Supply Unit.
You're still not giving us much to go on. I'd triple check your wiring between the case and mobo like Adrian said. Make sure you have the correct connectors on the correct pins (often they'll have markings on the board itself to help you). If that doesn't do it, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe the board is just bad.
You guys are life savers!!!!!! I thought that the power connector for the power button was a 4 pin, but it was 2x 2-pins, and I plugged in the power one(not reset) to the right connector(for some reason there is a pin that has no function and thats where it was connected before) Thank You guys so much!!!!!
