    share $C in windows XP

    Hello,
I had a small home network with two PC on with win XP and other with win 98.
I shared drives C on both machines.
Now I din't have network anymore, and I want to unshare folders. I noticed in properties of disk C that this is shared like $C. When I try to unshare this I get message how this is created for adminisrative purpose only and every time I start windows this is shared again although I have only one user account.
If someone can tell my what is this shared $C and is it possible to unshare this?
    Thanks!

I don't think you can unshare it. Besides, anyone trying to access your HD will have to have your login information to get to C$. Just make sure it's not easily guessable (like a blank password or something).

It is exactly a blank password, but I'll change that

they're default admin shares for remote access and a potential security hazard

do a google search on it.... here is a random link on how to disable them permanently.

luckily it seems you must have sp2 on your xp machine, sp1 and earilier if you typed //machine-name/$C you could get full access to the root of the drive without a password.

You should have a firewall between your computer and any potentially hostile computers. You should also never use a blank administrator password.

Only if the admin password is blank, in which case you can just log onto the machine anyway.

You need to edit your registry.

    Disable Administrative Shares

perhaps they put a hotfix out for it after sp1 was released, but for quite some time I could do that with any computer regardless of an admin password...
