Linux install

Would it be possible to do a stage 1 install of gentoo with Windows still running? I am on a shared computer so there is no way I can take the 2 or 3 whatever days it takes to install it. Thanks for any ideas.

No, not if you mean it the way I think you do. Unless you use something like VMWare.

That is, it's possible to install Linux without deleting Windows, but it's not possible to do it while Windows is running, unless, as I said, you're running a PC emulator.

Or if you put a cross-compiler to a native x86 Linux in your Cygwin environment and compile everything by hand...

just so you know, if you have a fast connection (or the stage cd's), it should only take a matter of hours on a decent pc.

The connection was never the problem for me, actually. It's just that even on an Athlon XP 2000, Stage 1 took about 2 hours to compile, Stage 2 another 2 hours, Stage 3 another 2 hours, and that's without X.org (~3 hours) and KDE (~2 hours) or Gnome (~3 hours). And of course without Mozilla (~30 minutes) or OpenOffice.org (~1-2 hours).

Yeah it really depends on what you install, and how much. My machine does X in about 35 minutes, but for the whole shebang with KDE I think (IIRC) it took something like 4 to 5 hours) I am assuming you did not install everything?

I honestly can't remember all I did anymore. I have a rather wild array of Gentoo machines in my network, one of them just a server, which ran distcc to aid the other machines in compiling, so my numbers might be skewed.

stage 1,2, x.org, kde, mozilla, some other random apps took like 6 1/2 to 7 hours on my amd 3200 (64). It's also got a gig of pc3200 (cas 2-2-2-2) which I think made a huge difference as well. I've never compiled it on anything else so I don't really have much to compare it to. I just figured 72 hr. seemed a bit much .

hopefully madcow either figured it out or found a different distro to go with.

nice machine - I'm running an the same mobo with a 3500+ processor - 1 gig of Ram too. My video card is an MSI FX5700LE 128Mb - it works just fine for me as I don't play any games. I wish I had been more careful to time compile times - I started out on that system with one stick of 512 ram, and I *believe* it took about 45 minutes to compile X - later when I started over with the system, I had the gig of Ram, and I am fairly certain I shaved ten minutes off that time. Either way, its a heck of a lot faster than with my old Athlon 700 - KDE took a loonng time to build.

visit Debian.org and have a look the net install.

Basic install over the net doesn't take long at all (i used to do it this way when i was on 56k years and years ago), from then on you just keep getting the things you want using apt. If you need to go back to windows, apt will resume. just build it up gradually.
