    open source

correct me if I'm wrong, but open source means that the source code for the program is viewable.

But whenever I download an "open source" piece of software I can never find the source!

in specifics I'm refering to the GCC compilers for c and c++ and the mac OSX open source stuff

    any ideas?

Open Source implies that the source is available. It's not necessarily downloaded with the compiled software.

Sometimes it's a seperate download, sometimes acquired through a CVS, and sometimes provided upon request to the author/developers.

it's probably not installed on your hard drive by default. Go here and follow the links to either a mirror or to the cvs repository to get the source.
