Any suggestions for this mass screwed up comp?

My computer had so many viruses I couldn't do anything on it, even move my mouse in the right direction so I decided to reinstall WinXP (without deleting user files) and didn't backup my files onto a DVD or CD cuz i coudlnt do anything with my comp. Anyhow, now that I've reinstalled i cant get into WinXp cuz it gives me an error about Viruses/New hard Drives/etc and I've tried safe mode. Anyhow, is there any way to retrieve the data on the hard drive that can't be booted up?

Knoppix and burn into DVD/CD? 2 advantages:

    1. The viruses can't do jack about it.
    2. Quick and easy.

You could try the Recovery Console and try to get it back that way.

After that, there's a little tool that may be worth running (HijackThis) which identifies some malware that mainstream detectors/ removers don't handle. But that system needs to be up and running first, if possible.

It would cost about 80 bucks I believe, you could try SpinRite from the Gibson Research Company. It's compatible with all hard drive formats, and from what I've heard is supposedly the best out there. You can look at it from http://www.grc.com . Since you can't get into windows the formatting might be messed up to where the program wouldn't work, but you can probably email and ask.
