man is short for manual page - most UNIX like machines will have it (if it has not got the man pages, is it really UNIX? ) Anyway, you can use page up / down to scroll through the material, and shift Q to quit and return to your shell. try man man for the man page on man pages.

So to answer your question - (as if you did not already guess) man lilo.conf will give you the man page for lilo.conf. It has some good stuff in there, and I think (from a cursory scan at the timeout and prompt settings descriptions in that man page) that you should find what you are looking for.

I usually use KWrite to edit those kinds of files. Just go into the shell and type su, then enter the root password, then type kwrite /etc/lilo.conf . It's a lot easier than using emacs, but it's good to learn emacs though.

i would install slackware 10.
it has a bunch of new upgrades kde, gcc, etc.
this will prevent having to upgrade them later.
slackware kicks major @$$, so i think you will enjoy it.
