get a knoppixx or mandrakeMove boot cd and use the tools on it to partition your drive first. I believe Knoppixx has qtparted, and mandrakemove has a partition utility in their control center.

I know what you're talking about man, I tried installing Slackware too. I got partition magic, and I thought I was all ready. I wasn't.

Let me say, when partition magic messes up, it does one hell of a job

I couldn't boot into anything, and it was because of HP. My computer has a "recovery" (yeah, right) partition which doesn't read properly. And HP wasn't very helpful (*cough*) with this situation, all they wanted was my number and address.

Eventually I fixed it, and just installed Mandrakelinux 10, and it's partitioner is AMAZING. The install is a lot of point and click, and it comes with a lot of great software like OpenOffice and many good programming environments (sorry, can't remember the name of that godly one---im sure you know what I mean).

I'd reconmend Mandrakelinux to a beginner, because the install was simple. just remember, DEFRAG before install.

Before you start, follow Waldo's advice: use qtparted (nice graphical interface, a lot like partition magic) on knoppix to partition your drive. Or you could follow the fdisk steps described in the step-by-step installation link below to partition your drive.

Two useful pages to read before you start installing:
