    Exclamation IE, firebird downloads stall

    hello,

Im having a problem with internet explorer and mozilla firefox. everytime i try to download a file like a video, app. or something it will go for a few seconds at 5 kbps then stop. This problem is annoying and i did try to call my ISP but they dont know what is wrong. I use a linksys router, connected to a dsl modem then to the net. i have a fresh installed copy of windows XP after a virus took over my last install. If you can help me i would greatly apreciate it.

    thank you, nick

first, run spybot or adaware and check for spyware, that's my first guess (you say you freshly installed so it'd be easy to pick one up before you get the patches on. The second possibility is that you're router and modem just need to be reset, could be causing connection instability.

I also have a question, do page loading times lag sometimes, or is it specifically downloads? Secondly, is there a difference between downloading from http and ftp? ie: it only disconnects on one or the other?

Echo Waldo on this one. My first step would be to unplug both the modem and the router and plug them back in (there is a routine to this, so post again if you need to know approximate times to wait before plugging each back in). And I'd also suggest searching for spyware and making sure that all your windows service packs are installed.

    hello,

Ok I Tryed to reset the router "linksys". all it did was increase the download speed to 140 kbps. but it might be a spoof because it just looks like it but the download is still ultra slow. when i had the virus on my computer, it made it un workable internet wise so i had to reformat could the stupid virus maybe leaked through the format onto the new partition? requiring me to do a brute erase? help!

Did you unplug both the router and the modem?

    Unplug both.
    Wait 30 sec.
    Plug in the modem.
    Wait 30 sec.
    Plug in the router.
    Reboot PC.

If that doesn't work, reinstall windows.

It's not a virus, spyware or windows.
    I had the same problem.
A linksys wrt54g router and an d-link dsl 300T modem.

Try a firmware update. That did the trick for me. If you have the same router (wrt54g) then there's a new update available from the end of august I think.

I still have problems with the router for some strange reason msn won't work under windows xp, but amsn works under linux.
For this reaon I have removed the router from my network until I have the time to figure out how to correc the problem.

But make sure you don't disconnect your pc when you're doing the firmware update

When you get everything to work, can you post it here (or pm me) I'm intrested in the result

And one more thing, this may sound stupid but I forgot it the first time : put your modem in bridge

    well,

bad news. I totally erased the boot drive TOTALLY using DBAN then reinstalling windows IT STILL wont work. The downloads are slower than s***. it took 6-7 min. just to get aim to talk to a computer person downloading minimal computer updates took most of the day. this has totally dragged me to the end of my rope and im about to just throw my whole network out my window if it dosent get fixed. still need answers and yes i updated firmware dident help. Its a high speed dsl four port router by link sys. If ANYONE has ANYTHING to say please do so because i might just go ahead and get rid of my network and my machine its done nothing for the past couple of months, nothing besides give me trouble help!!!

I just posted my question about my strange problem over there.
Maybe someone can help you over there.

What model of router do you have, that might encourage people to look for the answer

    >>because i might just go ahead and get rid of my network and my machine its done nothing for the past couple of months, nothing besides give me trouble help!!!

I know he feeling, I threw mine acros the room once, luckely (or maybe not) it landed on my bed .

If I don't get the poblem fixed before the end of the year, I'll buy a new one, but i won't be a linksys

First: Try plugging the modem directly into your computer (make sure you reboot both when you do)

Second: Double-check your modems config, make sure everythings fine and dandy.

Third: If you haven't already disconnected the other computers from the network, do so, they may have spyware/viruses on them that are sucking the bandwidth dry.

Fourth: Call your ISP, their tech support should be able to come out and take a look at it (make sure it's not a problem with one of the other computers sucking bandwidth first or you'll look like an idiot )

Fifth: Throw you network out the window.

There is no reason to get that upset about it. Call in a pro if it is really causing you that many problems. Have you considered that maybe it's not a problem with your network? It could be a problem with the service, or the lines, or something like that. DSL can be weird in that if you don't have the frequency set right, it can be all F-ed up. Call your ISP and have them look into it. I'm starting to doubt that it's your fault.

I've talked to him on AIM quite a bit. He's done pretty much everything by the book with minimal results. IIRC another computer on the network does the same thing. We ruled out that it was his computer. We had it down to the router, modem, or ISP.

I've just been kind of touch and go lately to be much help. So, I sent him here.
The world is waiting. I must leave you now.

Shadow has it correct. Ive tryed everything under the sun yet fixing the other computers but not fixing mine. It could be my netework card a wireless D-link dwl-520 rev. E or the router a BEFSR41 dsl four port router OR the ISP I just can't tell.

P.S Shadow you had to drag your t-128 into this? im so mad i might just scream like one or a thunderbolt LOL.

    Edited for names.
