If you have been reading any of my other posts lately you now I have a new laptop.
The networking on this laptop is not working.
I'm running windowsxp on this laptop.
I have the following set up.

		 [Cable Modem]
			 |
	   [D-Link Router/Hub/Switch]
	   /		 |	  \
	  xp	   slackware	  98se

My xp configuration will not allow me to route through the hub. It insists that I'm using a Gateway. I'm not using a gateway for my connection. Every time I try to create a new connection using the hub configuration, it says that it can not idenitify the connection. It says to manually configure. I set up the D-Link so that I'm using DHCP and Static Ips. Does anyone know how to make this work. Every time I check my connection properties it says it may have been corrupted.

I did do that, but it doesn't work.
When you click other it gives you two options gateway or hub.
I do not have a gateway. When I select the hub it errors on the final configuration.
When gateway is selected, it says it can not recognize the type of connection being used.

so whats your router's ip? mines 192.168.2.1. Just put your own ip for each box and specify a "gateway" (the router ip).

After you specify, make sure you go into the router and change the "range" for the DHCP so it cant affect you. For example, my range WAS

192.168.2.2

to

192.168.2.100

Now its

192.168.2.11

to

192.168.2.100


This means i can give my computers a custom ip that ends in .2 - .10 and the DHCP server will never reassign those ip's. Turning DHCP off throws my router into hell, so i just leave it on and make sure its range is rotating computers that dont exist.

Run the setup wizard, tell it you connect through a gateway (second option on the first option screen, not under "other"). Go into the properties of your connection, select tcp/ip, hit properties, hit advanced, under gateways, add the ip of your hub. Apply all that, restart, and see if you can get an ip address.

it didn't work.
I typed in exactly what you stated, but the gateway option still is unsuccessful.
i altered the tcp/ip options, but no luck.
any other ideas would be appreciated.
i have my router ips set up for a range
from .1 - .5

router 192.168.0.1
printserver 192.168.0.2
linuxbox 192.168.0.3
win98se 192.168.0.5

my xp ip is set for random dhcp address.
it defaults to 192.168.0.4 due to that is the only available one on the network.

it says that the windows management instrumentation might have been corrupted. How does this happen? Would that have something to do with this? Has anyone had to deal with this before?

what service pack do you have installed? If you have sp1, upgrade to sp2. If you have sp2, uninstall and reinstall it. If that still doesn't work, boot off the xp cd and run a repair, then put the service packs back on.

it is a brand new version of windows, so i believe it would be service pack 2.
what service pack created the new firewall options? wasn't that service pack 2.

first, try disabling the firewall. Then if that doesn't work, uninstall sp2 (if you can), otherwise run the repair like I said earlier. Those are about the options you're down to.

so you want to hear about the stupidest thing i have done lately?
i was trying to streamline my pc after i received.
first i uninstall any software that has been determined a waist of memory.
aol, earthlink, etc.
then i go into my startup menu from msconfig to try to make sure all the other stupid things are squashed at boot. dell alert, microsoft office, etc.
i deactivated a start up option that was needed for windows to auto detect my network settings. i should have guessed this, but i have done so much configuration on this machine like loading compilers for different languages and such that i didn't think of it until last night. needless to say after i stepped through all of my adjustments i figured it out.
i was really starting to worry though. i'm finishing up my cisco certification, and if i wasn't going to be able to figure this out, i was starting to think to drop that portion of my educational track. thanks for all the help on this issue. you helped narrow the possibilities down.
