    Slow windows

    i have p4 1.6 ,80 gb hd,256 mb sd ram config pc.
it has winxp pro and pcqlinux 10.0 loaded in it.

Recently my windows has got really slow. When it boots for the first time then i can't acces the taskbar(start menu etc..).If i log off immediately and re log on then everything works fine. I have tried reloading windows but that hasn't helped.
What should i do?Would formatting the hd help?

Yes the task manager does show 100% cpu usage most of the time. I have scanned the pc for viruses but found none.
I don't know if there are any spywares installed.
How do i know if there is spyware installed in my pc?

My system also connects to a LAN consisting of 16 people.Could that be responsible for slowing of my pc?

i had the same prob recently: i reinstalled windows and it is fixed.
thats the first time it happened to me.

however try looking what process is taking 100% of spu usage: stop that process and that should fix ur problem.

Well, here's another way to help diagnose (and most of us here probably know this one by heart )

type "msconfig" in run (no quotes)
    Go to Startup
Check off what you don't want to start up
Apply changes and see if your computer starts up any faster

Sometimes spyware and big programs are scheduled to run with your computer at startup. but sometimes the above isn't enough. Here's the 31337 way

Open up regedit.exe (via run, its easier). Go to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

This holds the keys to the files that startup. do the same, replacing HKEY_CURRENT_USER with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Sometimes they're in there too. Just delete what you don't like.

    Hope I helped

well he will not be able to run msconfig since his cpu is maxed (or it will crash on him) first thing is to close the process then run msconfig

and if you are going to reformat I would recomend doing the gw scan instead of just reformating. I see that alot and I think, that won't help much. But only re format as a last resort. It sucks restarting!
