Linux OS built to run with Windows

This question appeared on a discussion board from one of my classes...I'm posting it here, because no one responded yet, and I'm curious as well, thanks.

    Hi all...

Could anyone here suggest a good Linux OS that'll run on a Windows machine without having to create a disc partition? I know of WinLinux, but I'm hoping there might be a few others out there. I'm hoping to be able to do some testing more here at home and save myself from having to do all testing in the labs.

I've got one machine running XP and one running 98 (yeah, I've been assimilated by Microsoft-- I blame my high school for creating my irrational hatred of Macs by forcing me to program on what were fairly slow Macs to begin with running Borland C++ in SoftWindows. I'm sure it was possible to find a way to make the machines run slower, but this certainly was up in the top percent of methods). If there's something out there that'd work on one or both, I'd really like to try it out.

    Thanks all

Knoppix, MandrakeMove, Suse Eval, any live cd basically. I know I'm forgetting quite a few. But Knoppix rules IMHO

yeah I use Knoppix as well, but I thought she might be asking for something else; knoppix runs off of a cd, and our assignment requires CDROM access with an audio cd inside...

    anyways, thanks waldo!

    bochs.org

it's an emulator, you can run linux inside it. Other than that there are millions of linux distros that will run inside windows, linux.org has a list of distros categorized by type, there's a listing for distros that run inside windows.

bochs is free, vmware is not

I use cygwin on top of windows when I'm forced to do windows. It's a nice emulation of a lot of linux. Not perfect by a longshot but pretty good.

I used vmware when my professor required us to compile under linux... cygwin is ok, but vmware emulates another "computer" and u have the whole OS, I thought it was cool
