Getting Sasser off of a secondary drive

A friend of mine had is PC infected with Sasser, and it's gotten to the point where it shutsdown immediatly on start up. Right now, I have it hooked up to a clean PC as a secondary drive. I tried to use the tool that microsoft issued out to get rid of it, but it doesn't check the infected drive (didn't think it would, but I figured it was worth a shot).

I'm thinking the only way to clear it would be to backup all the important files (he has a lot), and then format the drive. If at all possible, I'd like to avoid that. A few of you were able to help me out when I had my own PC infected, so I'm hopeing somebody can help me out with an alternative here.

    Thanks in advance

symantec.com should have a removal tool, that should allow you to remove it, if not, download avg antivirus. MS patches should not be relied on to remove virii.
    PHP and XML

Yea AVG is the way to go. Its small and free, and will allow you to choose the drive to scan
