Do I have to setup my wireless card a certain way to work with different networks?

    Hi,

I have a Linksys wireless card for school, since the library and engineering buildings have wireless networks, along with other buildings. I have not yet installed it, but I was reading through the the quick guide, and it was talking about setting it up with a network.

Now it talks about choosing Infrastructure mode or Ad-Hoc mode, along with SSID, and security. Is this something that I'll have to ask my school about as to what to use? Or can I just install drivers and stick it in my laptop? Questions also apply with using it with hotel networks?

Also, is it possible to just install the drivers and not have to go through that setup if you can go that route?

I'd also like to not see anyone else's computer on the network, or have mine seen while on the wireless network. Is being on a different workgroup going to be able to let me do that, or would I have to set up the card for that as well?

    Thanks.

    Hi alpha,

I have a Linksys WPC55AG wireless card, so I think I can answer your question about configuring it for your school's network. Althouhg this card does allow you to set it up for a certain wireless network, it shouldn't be neccisary. It should pick up the wireless network automatically...if you're running Windows XP, it should even automatically connect to the network. If it doesn't automatically connect, go to the wireless cards' software, click on "Site Survey". Under that, it will have a list of all the available wireless networks. Simply chose one, and hit connect. It will automatically detect SSID, Infrastructure or Ad-Hoc mode, etc...

Concerning wireless networks in hotels, same thing, it should automatically detect the settings.

    Hope this helped.

Ok, thank you. Another question, did you use the setup disk to install the drivers or did you let windows find drivers? And if you did use the disk, can you install the drivers without configuring for a specific network?

    Thanks again.

I installed them off the disk, didn't let Windows find them. Just stick the disk in, and install the software. Once you've done that, just stick the wireless card in to finish the process, and you're all set for some wardriving =D

The only configuring you might have to do is to enter the network key.

I actually have a WPC54GS, and it recommended in the Quick Install to click install but talked about setting up as well. It shows in the User Guide that Linksys uses their own Monitoring software, but I went ahead and just installed the drivers and am going to use the XP monitoring.

Unless there is some reason I should stray away from this method, I'm going to go ahead and use it this way.

Oh, it just came to mind, would I need to use their monitoring software for the Speedbooster to work properly?

Eh, forget it, I'll just go ahead and install their monitoring software and try that out. If I have problems with it, I'll just uninstall it.

    Thanks again.

I went ahead and installed the drivers and the Linksys monitoring software. I initially just installed the drivers and used XP monitoring, but I figured I'd just go ahead and try their monitoring software. I thought it might make a difference with the Speedbooster, it may not, but... I'll give this setup a try, and see how it works out.

I just set up an arbitrary default profile, and I'll let the Site Survey find the networks from there..

Hopefully I won't have to enter a wep number to access the school network, but if I do, I'll just ask them about it.

    Thanks for the help.
