    Registry file failure

    The dreaded:

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate

Three weeks ago my better half had this error and when I used the recovery console to repair it the c:\winnt\repair folder was corrupt so I had to do a complete reinstall!

About 2 hours ago, I just received the same error again. Now once again I need to go into rc and try to fix the problem.

My question: What in the hell could possibly cause this to occur twice in one month? I'm thinking maybe a faulty disk. What do you think?

    Thanks in advance.

Either faulty disk or faulty memory. The only other thing that would do it would be a corrupt motherboard.

my question is, what kind of software is installed on this pc? If you can, first do a full format then install, see if it happens again. If it doesn't, tell your better half to get an antivirus prog.

    and you would know how??

I'm just making a suggestion that would allow him to rule out a virus and narrow down the problem, there's no need to repeat the fact that it could be hard drive or memory failure. And I have to use several different antivirus programs because of my line of work, any of them made after 2002 I've never seen do something so horrible as crash a registry...how could they sell? You really need to think about what you say before you begin to type. Some people need antivirus software, some don't, don't think you know everything.

I have to disagree with you Jimbob. If his better half had the problem, and then him (and most likely the computers are connected in some fashion, or they're sharing disks), I too would point the problem towards a virus. In your case, you reformatting, effectively wiping out the possibility of a virus. Things don't just randomly happen to 2 computers like that.

Thank you all for your quick replies.
Just to clarify, it was the same pc on our home network that has had this problem both times. It is an older Gateway Pentium 3 so I am leaning toward a hardware failure. I don't run anti-virus full time but rather off of a cd with current definition files. I haven't found an av program that I care for yet.

I would highly recommend AVG AntiVirus. It's better than all that expensive crap like Norton AV and McAfee AV...it's free and reliable. If you're running Windows, an AV is a must-have!

And on that note, I think we can close the thread. As if your rep wasn't bad enough already.
