    New Laptop Woes

Ok, so I decided to start another thread in the hopes that people that might be ignoring the other one might read this one.

I have reformatted and reinstalled windows on the laptop to no avail. The origional problem was this: You boot up and it sits at the Windows XP Home loading screen for an extended period, and then you get a BSOD saying that "atapi.sys" is missing. So I did a reinstall without a format and then it would just do the same thing, BUT it would reboot when you get the BSOD. I could not get into safe mode or anything, with the system hanging on a file called mup.sys on that attempt.

I have even tried removing the HD and putting it into my desktop, but a variety of configuration failed and I was never able to get my desktop to even recognize the drive. However, I don't think it's the hard drive because it went through the reinstall and the format just fine and supposedly reinstalled windows.

So I'm lost on what to do next. I'm beginning to think the mobo is toast.

    Hey ober,

Have a look at this link below. It covers MULTIPLE problems that you may be having with mup.sys and their possible solutions
    http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1047532372

If you're still getting errors regarding atapi.sys (after trying the last suggested solution- allowing windows to repair itself) then I'm stumped!

    Good luck mate.

I'm guessing it's ram, especially if it's an older machine. I was working on a compaq one time, install of windows went ok, but as soon as I tried to boot it or put any real load on it it would crash (any windows version, and knoppixx).

It's a sony... only about 2 years old. I'll see about the RAM, but why wouldn't it just BSOD with a memory dump instead of pointing out a specific file?

cause that's the file that windows couldn't move into memory (usually the case).

Try running knoppixx or something on it and see if it crashes or not, if it doesnt' crash, i owe you a coke.
