    svchost.exe shuts down computer?

I was on my computer, and I hit ctrl+alt+delete to bring up the task manager (winXP), and I was in the "Processes" tab. I saw svchost.exe was taking up a rather large amount of power, and even though it was a "SYSTEM" process, I shut it down.

After I did that, another appeared, and I shut that down too, only to see a window telling me to save everything because in 50 seconds my system would shut down.

Is this really a system file, or do I have some type of trojan?

SVCHOST processes are the containers that run NT/2000/XP "services". If you have anything installed as a service, there will be at least one SVCHOST process.

If one is using excessive resources, examine your services, do not kill the container.

    Congratulations! You've got Blaster!
Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

I'm running the fix tool now, I'm not sure if I have it. The thing is, if I do, it only effects me when I manually stop the processes. It was something I was doing out of boredom, and I stopped, so I don't see where the effectiveness (as a virus) of the blaster comes in.

It's scanning now, and if there was something, thank you XSquared, and even if there isn't thank you. You too adrianxw.

    EDIT

    No blaster. Thnx all

yeah man, it's using a lot of resources, but if you run an application, it will take more resources as the services take less...unless you've told xp to give priority to background services...but the default is application preference.
