    Question Windows 2000 privileges

In my university, all computers had been forbidden to install any software. All computers use windows 2000 SP4.

My wonderings come when I couldn't install mIRC, yahoo messenger, msn messenger and mozilla. It say i don't have enough privileges.

But, suprisingly, my friend could install Skype, which is voice chat program. Anyone has any idea? We both try on the same computer that restricted permission to install any software.

It's all about what the install program tries to do. On a secured machine, a user will not be able to write to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE portion of the registry or "C:\Program Files\". If the install program avoids these areas, it may be able to succeed.

Most non-trivial programs will require write access to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to install.
