getting linux boxes to speak to each other...

How does one configure Red Hat 9 to recognize and communicate on a LAN? I know how to get windows to do so, but I'm quite new to linux.

To clarify: I believe I have the server side of Samba configured correctly, but I have no clue as to how to use the client to move files and do other lan functions.
