    Damn router

I have a running home network with cable internet and a belkin 4 port router. All computers run XP. I am using the 192.168.2.x ip set with a 255.255.255.0 subnet.

The network computers run off DHCP, which i want to change so all my ip's stay the same. I went to the router config thru IE and turned off DHCP. I then went to my pc, and opened the TCP/IP settings for the network connection.

I clicked specify ip, and made the settings as follows:

    ip: 192.168.2.2
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    gateway: 192.168.2.1 (router)

DNS: 68.46.114.XXX (static ISP ip, i blurred the last three digits).

Now with these settings, i couldnt get internet or AIM working, but i can still get into the router. I rebooted/shutdown the router, modem, and both computers (my dads and mine).

Still nothing. Now, let me tell you why im doing this.

I am going to be hosting a UO server using Sphereserver. This means i need to setup the router to forward port 2593 to my pc (192.168.2.2). Last night i had setup two virtual servers in my router:

port 2593, TCP, on 192.168.2.1 (router)
port 2593, TCP, on 192.168.2.71 (my pc, note 71 was the old DHCP ip)

This was working, until i restarted the router and it changed my computer ip to 192.168.2.55.....now you see my problem. So i go back into the router, and its only showing one port forward:

port 2593, TCP, on 192.168.2.1 (router)

Dammit, saw that coming. So i add a new forward with my new ip for my pc. Identical to the one above with a .55 instead of .71.

I click apply, and the router erases it. Now your upto speed with where i am. I need to start by getting rid of DHCP so maybe then i can get it to forward to my comps ip, which will then be static.

Hope i made sense, how can i get it to work without DHCP?

I figured it out. I only need to open the port for the router's ip, then set the sphere to run on 127.0.0.1. Since they are connecting so the WAN ip thru 2593 it just "finds" it.....least its working.

Nah wasnt a DNS error, keeping it pointed at the router didnt help either. And Belkin techie couldnt have made a word document let alone help me.

My D-Link router has an option named 'Static DHCP' this is what I had to enable to get my MAC addresses assigned to a static ip.

You shouldn't have to turn DHCP off on the router. Just set the various computers up to use static IPs... in other words, they won't care if a DHCP server exists or not... they'll just use whatever IP you give them and ignore the DHCP.

Also, all you should have to do is make the various network computers be on the same subnet as the router... the rest should work fine.

So when i specify my own ip (under the primary or the alternate?) and forward the router to that ip it will work?

    Worth a shot!

No good. I tried as the screenshot shows below, and even tried with the gateway set to the router. The ip shown is not in use by any other machine. I rebooted, enabled/disabled, u name it, couldnt get to the internet.

I'm not a total newb to networking, im really confused on this one as i havent owned a router before.

A combination of ober and mouses posts led me to the fix!

had to point the DNS AND gateway to 192.168.2.1 (router)

    FIXXXXXXXXXXXXXXED!!!!
