Earlier versions of Internet Explorer should still be usable, though you may face even more security issues, and a greater lack of standards compliance.

Anyway, why cant you get the version info from:
    Help -> About
    or a similiar dialog?

I do think that most of the time, it shouldnt be too difficult to upgrade a web browser, though.

err... from what I know, MSIE is essential to MS Windows, so you cant really delete it as you would other web browsers.

    I suggest that you state:
    1. Operating system and version.
    2. Version of browser in question after the fresh install of the operating system.
    3. Exactly what did you attempt in order to upgrade the browser.
    4. Your diagnosis on why did the upgrade fail.

For example, some time ago, I installed win98 on this box.
    So my answers would be:
    1. MS Windows 98 SE
    2. MSIE 5.x (I think, cant remember what exactly)
    3. Went to:
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Scanned for updates, and from there choose to install MSIE 6
    4. The upgrade was successful.

well there is a hack around this.. you have to delete/modify some registry entry which would allow you to uninstall IE which you can later install from MS site... The document link below explains how to do it.. But i am not sure if its for 2000.. just checkit out

I recently installed IE6 from an MSDN disk on my 2K Pro box, and it didn't give me any problems.
@Joanna: Are you looking for it in the add/remove prgrams app? It won't be there. You should go to the microsoft website (http://www.microsoft.com) and download the intaller from there. You should then run the installer and when it's finished it'll ask you to (or tell you you should) reboot.

@laserlight: Internet Explorer is not an essential part of Windows, Explorer is (in a way). The filename for Explorer is explorer.exe, which is actually what's known as the desktop, and it may be also Windows Explorer, not sure.
Internet Explorer is called iexplore.exe, and is what allows you to browse the Web.

hmm... I had the impression that the core of both of them were the same.

    In a way, they are.
Open a folder in Windows and you'll just see explorer.exe running. If you open Internet Explorer you'll also see iexplore.exe running.
The interesting part is what I've just found out. explorer.exe and iexplore.exe share most of the code, because they will swap functionality (probably using a lot of .dll files), so you now have two programs that have (almost) the exact code. In fact iexplore.exe is completelly redundant, as explorer.exe will access all the functions iexplore.exe provides, but without spawning another process, but forking.
Makes you wonder what the guys at MS are thinking.
