    PCI vs AGP

My friend got this computer, a Compaq, about two months ago, it has intel graphics and p4 2.4

It has no AGP slot and we wanted to run Unreal Tournament 2004 with all graphics options.

I found this one vcard on the net and it's a GeForce 5200 with 128MB. It uses PCI slot. So I'm wondering if this card would run UT2004 as good as if it was an AGP card of same type.

Here is the link to the card that I'm talking about: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...8501&CatId=697

thats true. One of the many downfalls of many compaqs is that they have do not have an AGP slot (happened in three of mine)

You can't run recent games with all graphics on on any off-the-self computer. If you don't build it yourself, at least ask for the parts.

I didn't build my dell myself and I have yet to have it truly stressed.

In this day in age its very unlikely I'll be building another computer for a while. Just not worth it.

Ati Radeon 9200 PCI is going to be the best PCI you're going to find.

PCI simply doesn't have the necessary speed or bandwidth to compete with AGP.

Oh, the frustrations of Compaq. I used to own a compaq. Get it? Used to own one. I had to go out and buy a GeForce 4 MX 440-SE PCI for it. It was pretty good and allowed me to play Morrowind, so I was happy. You can pick one up for like $20 off of EBay.

So, looks like I won't be able to play UT2004 with a best PCI card on the market?

Of course you can! Just not with any eye-candy, and probably only at 800x600 resoltion....

UT2004 just happens to have an awesome engine that runs fast without much hardware. Like I said before, the GeForce 4 MX 440-SE is only $20, and it's a pretty good card for the price.

Radeon 9200 PCI is $100 but it will kick the snot out of that MX. Among other things, it's a DX8.1 card (MX 440 is only DX7)

pci is to agp what a gokart is to a porche

Hate to burst your bubble, but all GF4 cards are DX8.1

And it kind of makes sense that it will beat the snot out of the MX, it's 5 times more expensive!

Why do compaq sell comps without AGP slots? I mean, in this day and age and all..........
