    Hexadeciamal WEP Key needed...read please

    OK... I have been working on networking my old laptop, my Dell Demension series i4600, and my dads custom pc... my old laptop is getting internet by a PCMCIA card. Both my Dell and my dads custom PC are in the workgroup... (I call it a network).. but when I try to get my old laptop in.. it doesn't read/ "talk" to the either of the other PC's. I believe my solution is to encrytp the data with a 128-bit encryption.. whatever you want to call it. The only problem is that when I do this the PCMCIA card looses connection to the router... is there anyway that I can fix this problem.. I have enabled the encryption process on both the wireless router and the card but it looses connection every time. Can someone please help me with this delemia.... please.... I do not know what to do for the hexadeciaml WEP key... I have tried disabling the firewall (Both Windows and Norton) but still it does not work... is there something that I have wrong or what.... (Dell Demension Series i4600 specs P4 2.66GHz Processor 256MB of ram. Laptop Toshiba Tecra 8100 specs.. P3 253Mhz Processor 128MB of ram.     have you updated your drivers lately? Disable Norton completely as well, that's been known to cause problems. Also, what OS(s) are you running?

    Windows XP Pro (Laptop) Windows XP Home (Dell) Windows 2000 Pro (Custom PC). I have tried disabling norton before and it still didn't do anything.....

    Well make sure you have the latest drivers for you pcmcia card, that sounds like it's the root of your problems, it should be able to handle 128 bit encryption no problem, it has to be a bug in the driver

    no there is the latest driver installed.... mabey its just because its wireless.... windows is so gay..... well anyway i fixed the probelm... just went out and baught a hard wire PCMCIA card works just fine it sees both my computer and my dads no problem... windows is gay.... i need a mac... LOL!!

    well there are some special circumstances involved with wireless, it could have been the physical location of the thing that prevented it from keeping a solid connection...I'm not exactly a huge windows fan either but I don't think it was the problem (entirely anyway).

    Ha, my next suggestion was to go out and buy a better card

    no i doubt it was the location because the router has a 50Meter radius for signal at 11MBPS and I can turn around and see the laptop and the card... I think that it was windows... just reading that the wireless connection wasnt secure enough to share data just in case someone decided to get a wireless PCMCIA or something else made by this company and piggyback my internet connection.... don't know why it wouldnt keep the connection... I'll get around to figuring that out one day... just like I did this.... I've had the laptop and custom PC for a short while now and never got around to doing it until Christmas Day.... but trust me before long I will have the biatch figured out.... please excuse my language....

    don't sweat the language

    btw there are other things that affect wireless communication, you do know what microwaves are don't you? (no not the thing you cook your food in)

    well not i dont remember sad to say... i may only be 15.... but last year is already a blur to me... LOL anyway if you could refresh my memory... the only thing that i would know of that would screw up my signal would by other wirelss things like cordless phones... mabey even my wireless keyboard and mouse combo.... who knows... LOL

    Well microwaves are on a frequency near radio waves (can't remember what the bandwidth is, but it's near there). They're used sometimes to transmit wireless internet connections over long distances. But I was just using them as an example, they may not be a problem. But there's all sorts of crap going on in the atmosphere that can mess with that kind of stuff, it could even be in your house and you wouldn't even think about it...tv's, monitors, anything that gives off radiation basically.

    lol well why didnt you say so in the first place..... i have a monitor next to the router and two tvs between the hub and the card.... guess its a good thing my house was pre-wired with cat5 or we wouldve never been able to get her laptop to talk to my dads and mine......

    damn you're lucky, it's just a good thing we remodeled 2 bathrooms, otherwise I'd be running it up in the crease of the ceiling. I just got my computer and the family (dad's work pc) networked and sharing internet off mine. It's dialup, but my modem is faster, so whenever one of us wants to use the net we just connect with mine and use the ppp over the cat5.
