nah POS xp doesn't have a boot cd tool (besides the original disc) you actually have to create one (google has many links for this btw). If you're looking for a recovery disk, you can make an ASR. It's basically a shadow backup coupled with a floppy that has important settings saved on it.

it took you more time to post that than to use google.....freakin lazy
it will be the first hit most likely so just type it in ok? We don't mind helping you, but we will not hold your hand.

I already explained what an ASR was.
You can't make one right now becuase you can't get into windows. And btw the recovery cd is not a recovery cd, it's called recovery console, and it's on the WINDOWS XP cd. Got that?

Right click the floppy drive in my computer, click format, then click create an MS-DOS startup disk and click format. Boom! You gots yourself a startup disk!

You'll have to do some tweaking to get it to work with NTFS though . That shows Microsoft's stupidity. You can make a boot disk to try and fix crap, but you can only access your FAT32 partitions from it natively.

I don't think that method applies to XP.

    >>I don't think that method applies to XP.

echo that, and even if you tweak it, the free tools out there don't allow the editing of ntfs, only the reading

So, just pop in your xp cd, and select to install xp. When it warns about having an OS already, just continue anyway, and select NOT to format when asked. This is called an in place reinstall. This will replace all your system files and leave everything else in tact (not sure if installed programs will run though.....maybe you'll have to check, some of them may require certain registry settings that would have been wiped out, but most should still work fine).

BTW i didn't realise you were in a situation where you couldn't boot, that's why I was sort of harsh. If I knew that you needed a boot disk to actually boot I wouldn't have been such a smart a$$ .
    Good luck.

    >Does anyone know if there is an option in windows xp to create a boot up disk. If anyone knows then please tell me how to do it.
anyway don't worry about it. are you definetly sure that i won't lose any of my files by doing your method (ie not clicking format) i was hoping not too have to re-install my programs also but i guess thats not a problem if worse comes to worse.its just time consuming thats all

well you didn't mention that you had a malfunctioning computer, otherwise i would have said just use google, i didn't realise that you couldn't use your computer to create one by the tutorials on google.

I'm positive you won't lose any data, and most programs will still work. Shortcuts might be gone, and office will need to be reinstalled for sure. Besides that you should be good.
    Peace.

Hello genius. You're creating a MS-DOS startup disk. In case you're unaware of the fact that DOS only supports FAT, allow me to be the first to inform you. So unless ol' santaboy has XP formatted under FAT (lol), you won't be able to touch it once you get it booted.

    Get a clue.

    I already had a clue.

yeah but he'd have to pay for the tools to write to ntfs to fix things, so what the hell is the point??
