    *nix Gamma fixer

Is there any way to fix my gamma in a *nix environment? My screen is looking rather dark, and I can't figure out how to brighten it up a tad.

you have tried the controls on the monitor, I assume?

Yes. It's an old compaq CRT monitor. You know how compaq monitors are, they are dark as crap. I have my brightness turned to max. It's still dark as crap. In Windows I just used the color correction that is built into the nVidia driver's control panel, but the nVidia driver for FreeBSD doesn't have such a thing.

in some monitors, if you open them up there is three pots for tuning the range of sharpness, brightness, and something else. You can normally crank it up further than the OSD will let you. Though it does appear to shorten the life of monitors and im not sure if new ones have it or not.

Well i know all CRT's have them, that's just the techonology...and i wouldn't worry about it shortening the lifespan, you'd get a new one anyway right? But yeah you'll probably get wavy ghost lines and such if you leave it cranked up full brightness anyway...on any monitor regardless of tweaking, try if at all possible to just turn contrast all the way up and leave brightness down when working...it's easier on the eyes as well.
