    New Laptop

Yeah I am planning to buy a new laptop soon cause my old laptop is wayyyy too slow to do anything (200Mhz w/ 32mb RAM). Im looking for a 12.1" screen and a light (probably ultraportable) laptop so i can carry it around easier. Currently im looking towards the Dell Inspiron 300 M model (1.2 ghz Pentium M and 256 MB ddr 266 RAM) because of its attractive 3 lb weight. Any suggestions anyone? P.S. I really HATE docks

Steer clear of Dell laptops. They have more problems than you can shake a stick at. Go get yourself a Sony Vaio. You'll save yourself a lot of headaches.

Thats funny, I have two - no problems here.

KneeGrow: the 300 M is nice, but its not that bad carrying around a large laptop. Get an 8600!

Yeah, well I've seen several over the past years with very weird problems. If a company produces a laptop that you can't use anything less than 1600x1200 without getting a boxed window, then I'd call it a bad laptop. If a company doesn't honor it's rebates, I'd call it a bad laptop.

I've just had issues (and so have my friends) with Dell laptops in the past. Maybe not so across the board, but still.

oh my dads brand new one is HORRIBLE
the motherboard fried a week after he got it, he sent it in to be fixed, they FORMATTED his hard drive with all his data on it (he backed up but that was completely unprofessional and unneccessary), and they put the old chip back on the new board so now he keeps getting processor faults, sometimes it takes him 20 boots just to get past POST. He's going to send it in as soon as this project is over...we're never buying dell crap again.

If a company is willing to do that to a brand new customer (dad's boss) who just spent $3000 a piece on 4 new laptops (2 others had problems as well) then that's a crappy company.
and yeah that letterbox BS is such crap. you have to crank the resolution and then install new fonts justso you can see them, lame.

My old laptop is a gateway solo 2300 (top of the line when i bought it like 4 yrs ago) and it weighed 7lbs. God it was impossible to carry anywhere even with its 13" screen. I mean a laptop with a 15" or 17" inch screen is like a desktop.

Yeah, i ve never gotten a dell computer in my life, but my mom had a sony vaio desktop and god that thing blows. Its soooooo slow and always running outta memory with 512mb. I hate sony's, i think they should just stick to making playstations

I am not a laptop expert but I have a dell inspiron 8100 laptop over 2 years and I never had any problem. I am quite happy with it apart from its poor sound quality.

Not sony's fault buddy. I also have had big time problems with Dell laptops.

It's in your profile. Click on "user cp" at the top of the screen.

And I also second the notion of the problem not being with the Sony if it just "slows down". I once had a friend that had his system so bogged down with garbage that it would hardly run. I cleaned up the startup and the current running processes and it ran like a dream.

The issues I'm talking about with the Dells I've dealt with are hardware issues.

Dell computers in general are like the Ford vehicles of the computer industry. If you like it you love it if you don't you hate it.

Im not a huuuuuuuuuuuge fan of dells either but dells are good cause they are cheaper than all other brands. HP/Compaq don't have ultraportable laptops and sony's are more expensive than dells. Fujitsus are only 10.6 inches screen which would give me coke can glasses
