Windows xp and networking with other windows versions

We have a small network set up but with a pain in the ass problem we have not been able to solve yet.
We connect all our computers to an 8 port router to share the internet conn and have a peer to peer network.
    We have 1 98 machine, 1 xp pro and 6 2k.
The xp machine has internet access but cannot see any other computers on the network. The other computers see each other happily but will not see the xp pro machine. This is a complete pain. Anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

Had a similar problem this week....2 XP machines....wouldnt see each other....

Tried to share a folder on each and noticed that on the tab for sharing, one of the machines didnt show the normal "Share Folder on the Network as" stuff...it had a link for something like "Run Network Setup wizard"....as soon as this ran the network seemed to work....

Is this the same for you?

have run the wiz off the xp pro cd on all computers on the network as recommended (but never had to do before) and made no difference.
Tried reinstalling xp. That did nothing. Same problem as before. Wierd thing is i get internet but just cant see other comps on network. This is a complete pain as this machine is our colour printer server.

Have you tried connecting via the run dialog?

    \\remote_name\

    \\192.168.1.30\ (remote ip address)

If neither of those work please provide the error message and verify that you can are at least able to ping the remote machine by name and ip.

Are you using an IP only network? IPX or other protocols installed?

yes i can ping them. i cant browse them or even see them but a ping does work. Im sure its to do with the xp network security i just cant find anything in the policies that would stop me seeing other machines. Did a quick search on google, seems a common problem with many different causes by looks of things. but things that fixed it for others such as running wizard did not fix it for us.Was hoping maybe someone here had similar trouble and solved it and so knew cause.

I have that same problem. I can ping the machine and it says they are connected, but I can't get the internet shared.

Did you try this? What was the result? Just press start->run and type it in.

I had some problems connecting an XP machine to certain 2K machines. Turned out to be a protocol mismatch. However, you have to start somewhere, doing above should give you an error message.

Finally sorted it out. It was a problem with nortan internet security not being set up properly. It was disallowing network traffic for no reason. Specified a range of ips to allow traffic for and suddenly all the other comps show up.

    you know whats funny?
if you had mentioned that norton was on them in the first place...the first thing we would have said was to disable it
Norton is the root of all problems, seriously i've had more problems with that than...well, i've lost count

Norton is not the root of all problems. It has saved my machine numerous times.

If OP had it disabled, he would've had waaay more serious problems by now.
