    Vaio

Howdie! I finally got myself a handmedown laptop from my pops. It's a Sony Vaio PCG-FX370. It's kind of old, but It will have to do. I plan on formatting the Windows on it and installing Linux. The problem is, is that I need to backup EVERYTHING. And then transfer it to my desktop. What is the best way to do that?

Put NICs in both and use a cross-over cable. Either that or buy an IDE cable that will attach from your motherboard to a laptop HD and transfer that way (the cables are cheap).

You've got a cdburner on that badboy, how much of the 20 GB hard drive is actually being used? Shouldn't take too many CD's.

It's also got built in LAN, so that's the route I'd go personally.

Both my computers have ethernet cards. I'm going to try to take out the card being used as of now for my cable modem and attach it to my laptop. That SHOULD work right? Anything special needed? As for the space taken.... It actually has 2 local drives. A C and also a D. I think thats sort of cool. On the local C drive I have 7.43 total and 3.57 GB taken. On the D drive it says it's empty, but it isn't. It has a file 7,257 kb on it. Thanks for all the help guys

umm... this doesn't make sense. If they both have NICs, why are you putting something else in the laptop?

    Please clarify.

oh wait... I think you meant the cable. In that case, that will not work. You need what is called a "crossover" cable. A few of the wires are swapped from one end to the other. A straight cable will not work. If your cable modem is also used as a router or a hub, you could use that to transfer the data with 2 straight cables.

Yeah I wasn't that clear. My cable box (Thomas RCA cable modem) had the option for a ethernet OR a cable to connect from. I had a ethernet in it. I took that out and replaced it with a cable connection. So I had a spare ethernet cord and slot, while this computer was still online. I tried just putting the ethernet cable in my computer and my laptop. (Not the card, dunno why I put that) and it wont do anything. Do you understand what I'm trying to say? I don't really know the best way to say what I did.

I think I understand. Like I said before you cannot connect your laptop and your desktop with a normal ethernet cable. It will not communicate. You need to either make or buy a cross-over cable unless your cable modem has 2 ethernet ports that you can plug both computers into and they can see each other.

Am I making sense to you?

Yeah. So I can either turn my cable modem into a router or buy a cross over cable to run between the two.

Exactly. Can your cable modem do that? (ie. do you have 2 ethernet ports on the modem?)

edit: also, if you do, can you plug both computers in and have them see each other?

Just tried. And no my cable modem cant connect to both at the same time. It just stops working when I do. I'm probably going to go to the computer store today and get a cable that can go both ways.

Just remember, it's a "cross-over" cable. Should be about 10-15 bucks (which is WAY more than it should be already) unless they're trying to rip you off.

Ok. What type of cable is it? Ethernet? If so I need to get another NIC card to support that. By the way thanks for helping me. You've been a great helper

It will be an ethernet cable.

I thought you had a NIC in both computers?

I do, but my USB doesn't do too well in my computer. It wiggles free sometimes and shuts down my internet connection. So I prefer using my ethernet for that. Thanks for the help
