XHTML is the newest standard, but it's based on HTML4. You should be OK learning HTML4, as the difference is not very big.
Since you already have the book, learn from it and then take a look at some XHTML tutoirals on the net.

A good reference is w3schools's HTML tutorial. They also have tutorials for CSS, XHTML, XML, JavaScript etc.
What I want to know also is there any newer version of html, like html 5.0 or something?

Wrong, AFAIK. There is no "version 5" HTML. XHTML is not a newer version, but simply a mixing of scipting, such as Javascript and PHP, and markup. You'll do yourself well to learn HTML 4 for the basics and then start learning things like Javascript and the other web scripting languages (VBScript, PHP, CGI, Perl, etc.) that will help you make your webpages more dynamic.
