If I have just built a new machine, say up to date parts. And I set up my BIOS to boot 1st from CD, then I can install the OS without installing DOS, - which is the way I used to do it - right?

Pretty much every OS can be installed without installing DOS first, unless DOS is actually your OS of course

If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.
so, booting from CD will work with like XP home full version?

booting from a Home XP cd should send you into their setup that will allow you to install the OS, yes.
Awsome, no more hard ways... only the shortcuts!
But can you set up partitions when you boot from cd when installing the OS (XP home).?

I'm not sure about XP Home, I've only installed XP Pro. But I would imagine that they give you the option to do so. If not, get yourself a DOS boot disk (www.bootdisk.com) and do it using fdisk.
I'm pretty much sure that XP Pro installation does give you the option to create partitions from raw (unpartiitoned) disk space.
Boot off the CD and follow the instructions.
Using fdisk off a boot floppy would help too, of course.
