    Need help with registry

    Here's the deal.
Corrupted hkey local machine\System key. I havea backup from today, problem is, whenever I try to restore it (even from selective startup wiht no services running) I get the cannot import key open by process or service error. Is there anyway I can run regedit before windows starts? Or a tool that will force the new registry keys to take? I'm in a bind here, and google isn't getting me anywhere fast. Thanks.

This may not apply to Win 2K/XP, but I'm almost positive there is a DOS way of restoring registry backups. I just can't remember exactly what it is

If you have XP you could press F8 go to the boot menu and tell it to restore to the last known good setup.

Yeah i did that but the last known good had some conflicts for some reason

however by dumb luck and switching between last known good config and such, i was let back into my normal install by way of a very very selective startup mode . From there I reinstalled nearly all my hardware, and replaced drivers from the dllcache. Works good as new now.

When all else fails, read the instructions.

Yeah I found that, but after reading it it sounded kind of scary, made its sound like I couldn't just use my .reg file to replace one key.
