A heated problem

Hello,

I've recently bought a new processor for my computer, duly ripping out the old one in the process. The only problem is the only thing between the CPU and the heatsink at the moment is a nice layer of air, which doesn't have the ability to directly transfer heat from one medium to another, so my PC remains out of action for now. I'd use the stuff off of my old CPU, but it seems to be a bit old and caked on.

Short of stumping up for a syringe of stuff from an online shop (Which'll take a while to arrive), is there a quick fix for shunting the heat from the CPU to the heatsink, or should I just put my mouth over the CPU and breathe in continuously?

Use toothpaste. Well, it kinda looks the same.

Seriously though, why not just go to local store/shop to get some. It will only set you back £1.50 or so. Problem solved-no waiting for mail order!

Or, do they sell the sticker things now? My new retail AMD came with small sticker things. Dunno if you can buy them seperate though.

Actually... toothpaste works amazingly well. Until it dries up and turns to powder of course

I'm not sure if you can buy thermal pads seperate or not, but you can buy thermal paste at a store. It's not like it's expensive, so you'll be spending maybe 1 or 2 dollars more than buying online.

Unfortunately, I live in a rather town that appears to have been built around the university I study at. Hence there are about a hundred British, American, Indian, Chinese and Italian take-aways but only one computer shop, that just sells peripherals, cables and memory.

So for now, after placing my order for some Arctic Silver, I'm underclocking the CPU while I wait for it to arrive. It's relatively stable (Hovers around 50 C), but if I try to use it at its normal clock speed the temperature soars into the high 50s, so I'll run it slow for a little while, and not for too long either.

If you're in Newport at the moment, Computing Wales has just moved opposite the Police HQ. You might find that useful in future if that wasn't the computing shop you were talking about. They're pretty good apparently.
There's another two near Clarence Place that I've never touched and probably wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

I know there's a good few shops in Newport that do it, but I'm stuck in Loughborough (Central England, surrounded by some hills and a power station) at the moment, so I'll have to wait...

Thermal Tape doesn't work as well as thermal paste. You should get a heatsink and fan that is meant for your socket, then put on a bunch of arctic silver(Actually, you don't need a lot). There are many websites that sell thermal paste and heatsinks.

I'd probably have studied at Newport if they did CS, but they don't so I study at Loughborough, which is ~110 miles away from Newport. My parents can't get at me then, see...

Nearest big town is Leicester.
