I notice in xp behaviour.MY icons for softwares changes occasionally and it gets restored to their defaults when i reboot. There is no virus problem as I scanned with latest version of NAV and Mcafee with updated virus signatures. what is the problem

is your desktop cleanup wizard on? if so that might be doing it.
Could you clarify what you mean by setting them to their defaults? Do you mean their location on the screen? Or if they exist or not?

I will tell what i did by setting them to their defaults

suppose we have a winzip icon changed to IE icon. Then I restored to their original icons in the folder options. But even then it happens.

The strange thing here is that it happens only during night time around 8 or if i use the PC for a long time without break.

I don't remember what the registry cleaner in xp is called, it should be somewhere in your administrative tools. But it sounds like a registry bug to me.
