I finally got cable internet, and I am having problems. Every once in a while it'll say the Remote Procedure Call has failed or terminated or something like that, and it gives me a minute to save stuff before windows resarts itself.

time for you to patch windows... people or worms are playing with your pc using rpc
patch up windows, update your antivirus and do a full scan
then look for any backdoors that have been left behind

Thing is, it happened when we were testing the modem for the first time when the dude who set it up was here. He said he never seen it before.
I've been using the internet for like a half hour now at like normal speed and it hasn't had to restart, so I'm happy
Its only a two day old worm AFAIK and that is definitely the problem you are/were having

The problem you are having is the same problem I have been having, and also numerous customers at my store. The problem only seems to happen with Windows XP, atleast if it is the same thing. If it is that, I did a little research and the process that is shutting you down is the Generic Host Process, and is a spyware program put into Windows XP that lets them know various things about you. To correct your problem, use a fire wall, and then block the Generic Host Process. Thant should fix your problem. Also, it is not needed for anything, so don't worry about blocking it. Hope this helps.
I forget to add: If you can't stay up long enough to install a firewall, just dis-connect your ethernet cable. It wont, and can't shut you down if your not on-line.
Some more info I found out: You could have the Win32 Blaster virus that someone on this site told me about. In my case, I ran the scanner and I did not have the worm. It's symptoms are similar to what you stated, so it could be your problem. The link to get a downloadable exe fix is: http://xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-2582713,00.html#2
Like I said, this fix didn't work for me bacause my problems are caused by something else, but it's worth a try. If it also doesn't work for you let us know.

I got it fixed. I pressed CTRL+ALT+DELETE and found a process called MSBlast.exe was running. I google'd, and now it's all better.
If I was going to make a virus, I would've picked a not-so-obvious name
worm! not virus...
and yes we have been trying to tell you this since the start of the thread...
What, like taskmgr.exe? Anyway, whoever made this worm knew what they were doing and they did a good job. I'm not condoning writing virii, but there are a couple things to note
1) If you're going to do it, do it right. Most of the authors don't. This one did
2) If it gets people to patch their computers, I guess it's better
3) From a purely technical aspect, this seems to be one of the more impressive virii/worms from recent times. It's spreading rapidly and doing a lot of damage - not many virii do that.
4) I'm patched and behind a hardware firewall, and my ISP probably blocks incoming communications on port 135 anyway.
Away.
God dammit why do people not understand the difference between a worm and a virus?
Secondly why the hell do people use the word "virii" it is not the plural of virus, the plural of virus is viruses...
Lastly this worm is not impressive at all and was rather poorly put together. An example of a stroke of genius worm was the slammer worm which infected all availables hosts in under 15 minutes...
Wrong! A virus is a program that is characterized by the fact that it injects itself into host programs... That is a virus!Originally posted by frenchfry164
A worm IS a virus dude
Care to quote your sources of info ZerOrDie.
I have two quotes for you. From Newton's Telecom Dictonary 17th Edition copyright 2001
Virus: A software program capable of replicating itself and usually capable of wreaking great harm on the system.Basically the worm is the square and the virus is the rectangle.Worm: 2. A program that duplicates itself repeatedly, potentially worming its way through an entire network. ...
PS: Calm the hell down.
Care to quote your sources of info ZerOrDie.Any of various simple submicroscopic parasites of plants, animals, and bacteria that often cause disease and that consist essentially of a core of RNA or DNA surrounded by a protein coat. Unable to replicate without a host cell, viruses are typically not considered living organisms.Computer viruses must infect files or drives just like the biological viruses must infect a host cell to spread. The media has distorted the meaning of what is a computer virus. Now any code that does anything destructive be it a virus, logic bomb, worm or exploit is called a virus(albeit incorrectly).1949
Theories for self-replicating programs are first developed.
1981
Apple Viruses 1, 2, and 3 are some of the first viruses “in the wild,” or in the public domain. Found on the Apple II operating system, the viruses spread through Texas A&M via pirated computer games.
1983
Fred Cohen, while working on his dissertation, formally defines a computer virus as “a computer program that can affect other computer programs by modifying them in such a way as to include a (possibly evolved) copy of itself.”
1986
Two programmers named Basit and Amjad replace the executable code in the boot sector of a floppy disk with their own code designed to infect each 360kb floppy accessed on any drive. Infected floppies had “© Brain” for a volume label.
Now who do we follow the media's or the computer scientist's that came before us?
When quoting sources it helps to say where its from..
And actually for general speak you would follow the media and public usage. The term virus may have meant that in 1986 but the term has evolved and changed. I am sure in 2020 the term will have evolved to include more items.
I dont know who originally published the timeline but thousands of websites have it mirrored.Originally posted by Thantos

Lastly scientifically speaking definitions do not change no matter what the media's decide the word should mean. Letting the media's decide the definitions is a great way to become ignorant. Is a hacker an evil cyber criminal(hacker vs cracker)? Is linux an operating system like the media claims it is(linux is only a kernel)?
