    Unhappy Modem problem

    Hi, folks.

I'm trying to connect my old computer to internet, but it seems the modem is not functioning properly. My mdk 9.1 dist just can't find it (or at least the network/internet wizard doesn't and manual config doesn't help).

It's a pci modem, VT82C686 [Apollo Super AC97/Modem]. I couldn't find any suitable driver for it either.

Someone knows how to fix this?

    Thanx

    Talking

    Sorry, can't do that, I just can't...
Linux is just so much more than windows. You know I've used Linux for 5 mnths now and now I can't stand the look, feel or even smell of win32. Linux openes up for so many more possibilities....
By the way have you tried Linux?
Many win-users say .......... about Linux, when they haven't even tried it. That's a pity. They have missed a really GREAT experience.

Yes, I've tried three different distros of Linux (Redhat 8, Mandrake 9.1, and Knoppix) I've had some trouble with all of them. Anyway, what I said was a joke, because so many people here suggest installing Linux as the solution to everything.

    ooops

    Yeah, I know...
    My mistake..
    I've just found it .

Well, people, who say that installing Linux will solve everything are wrong. You don't solve anything... You just get a great os for programmers, hackers () and other comp geeks. I'm definetly among them.
Those who need something quick may use win - with pleasure. Linux (and UNIX) isn't something you learn over night.
But again win is sometimes (if not ALWAYS) too simple. You know, windows folks should have only one button on their desktop: one to press when they want to start Explorer, when they want to play, when they want to kill a process (that command shouldn't work, of course - it has never worked in windows; you just get up a blue screen , even in XP). If they have more buttons, they will become confused.. (kidding)
Another thing is that in win you always hear the words licence, copyright ie. I'm tired of that... Really, can't Bill Gates and all Microsoft imployees other words??

    And finally:
I hope that everyone will find out sometime that we need something cooler than win on the market.

(I've heard that win32 supports only 1 cpu. is that so??? or was that a joke? if it wasn't a joke, than it's really funny, or more correctly - tragical. how can you expect something of such a system?).

    Nope, it supports multi-proc systems.

End process works in WinXP. I've changed a lot of registry settings and done a lot of things I shouldn't do to Windows, and I've never gotten a blue screen of death out of XP. I've crashed explorer.exe several times, but it reloads itself within a few seconds. I've only completely crashed winxp a few times.
    Away.

I say Windows 98 is the greatest OS ever invented in the world, it doesn't eliminate pure DOS which you can't claim XP doesn't. Therefore, 98 is better than XP. And since we know XP is better than Linux (as proved by confuted ) and 98 is better than XP, 98 RULES ALL!!!!

    Just kidding I'm just jealous.

speaking of modem problems, the only time i've ever completely crashed windows was when my modem wasn't configured right. My isp was messed up at the time, and on top of it i found out later that at that same time they didn't support v.92 modems (that's what they said anyway) so my computer locked up during dialing and wouldn't wake up, so i had to reboot. Every other time it freaks out it'll wake up afte a minute or 2.
