    Audigy XGamer vs Live! 5.1

is there noticible difference in the audio between a sblive 5.1 and a sb live audigy?

im thinking of replacing my 5.1 from dell since it doesnt use the emu10k1 chip. with the the emu10k1 chip does it still sound good? will i notice the difference?

I'm not really sure. The Audigy (and audigy 2) is supposed to be a pretty big step up from the Live! card, but I'm not sure how much. I've tried soft-modding my Live! into an Audigy (there's a number of ways to do that) but quite frankly I could't tell a difference.

I think it is probably only worth it if you have the speakers to go along with it. Since I just have a cheepo $25 set of speakers that's my limitation.

I think his problem is trying to get it to work in Linux above the sound quality (judging from my thread).
    Away.

i was just wondering if the audigies are wirth the money.

since i have a dell sb live i can either pay something like $30 bucks for a special driver or $40 or so for a new card. a new cards is starting to seem better.

If I recall, Audigies can use "Advanced HD" (Marketingspeak for 24-bit sound). Whether you need that depends on if you can tell the difference between a 16-bit colour image and a 24-bit one. Of course, it'll only work if what you're using supports it, mind.

The other thing they have is an IEEE-1394 (Firewire) port. Do you need that (You'll lose the joystick port if you do)?

If not, stick with what you got. Remember that after Creative Labs made the Sound Blaster 16 sound card technology remained static for a good 7 years, and they've realised how much cash they can squeeze out of people by saying "But it does THIS!!!"

Very true. I have found little to no difference between the AWE64, XGamer Live, Audigy 1, or Audigy 2. EAX just sounds like a really exaggerated reverb most of the time and I normally let the games control whether they want to use it or not. Echoing voices is cool - but not when you are supposed to be in a quiet room or a simple dialogue with another character.

Most of Creative's cards seem to be marketing ploys IMO.
