Hmm, reading through a few posts, I've managed to put together a bit of a summary:
a) Dells screw you over horribly
b) IBMs screw you over horribly
c) Compaqs suck terribly
d) Toshibas are super expensive
e) Packard bells are bottom-of-the-line
So, my solution is: Buy a MacThey're not overly expensive, they boot fast, run fast, don't crash, and they even look good.

mart, I turned on the comp. Then, I got some funky blue screens. They proceeded to accuse me of screwing with the computer. (I don't remember the exact details, it was like 3 years ago).
EDIT: Gangly, is the HD fried? If not, you might be able to extract it from the laptop and copy the data using another computer.

My HD isnt fried golfing, its just this batterie required a bios update.
It also came with this cd-rom wich had 14 different bios updates on it. Normally you would just insert the cdd-rom boot from it and the cd-rom detects the system and determines wich update to install according to your system. And thats where it went wrong somehow this cd-rom managed to install a wrong bios=>laptop screwed.I tried degrading from bios but without any result.
Im getting errors all the time and i have a max resolution of 640*400 with 16 colors, infrared device is dead so is the video-card, the ethernet card, the soundcard...
PS: i did need to update the bios according to the booklet that came with the battery because this battery had a different voltage etc as my older battery... i wish id never bought that battery in the first place..
anyway i hope this IBM fellow can fix it.( wich dell refused).
I even know the exact bios i need, thats what i also said to dell but hey they cant help me they say, i mean its just one louzy file of 400 kb and they refuse to send it to me.

I don't think a bios update would fix giving the computer the wrong voltage... voltage regulation is a hardware issue, the bios is software (although it could control some of the hardware)

nope, i had a g4 for a couple days, its slow. some apps seem faster just because there 1/4 of the size of what their supposed to be.I'm sorry, you're wrong about that
they do crash, just not that often. theres alot of lag in some apps(i managed to pi$$ the finder thing off good once). so it feels like you need to control-alt-delete, then you find out that it doesnt work! i had nightmares for weeks.
the g4-ish case doesnt look that bad, but i dont like the half a sphere on a pole case, or the i-vac.
i think blackrat364 is right. you normally flash the bios for a bettery if it send s a signal another way. some use the acpi(i think thats what it is, im not a big laptop guy) and some use something else. so if it was the battery it would of power on and said it was at 0%(or some random number).
again, did you have a warrenty when this happened?! unless you order the laptop with a extra battery they dont have to help! is that how you did it?
i have a couple dells, i know there great, this seems fishy.
I did what the booklet and cd-rom said i was supposed to do before inserting this battery.
Dont blame me, blame the cd-rom and the booklet .

that laptop posted above only has 16mb of vid mem.and at $1799 USD thats like $2400 CDN, i can get a laptop with a 1.4Ghz centrino (1.4Ghz P-M out performs a P4-M 2.0Ghz), 64mb radeon 9000, 512 RAM and a 15' SXGA screen for that price from staples
